February 11, 2007
Honorable Mayor Mr. Sam Katz
City of Winnipeg, Manitoba
Canada
Dear Sir,
On January 16, 2007 the Jesus Christ Superstar National Tour buses enroute to Winnipeg, Manitoba from Fargo, North Dakota were delayed at the Emerson, MB/Pembina, ND border crossing by approximately 5 hours preventing the road crew from arriving on time at the scheduled 8:00 AM load in time set for the Centennial Concert Hall.
In most cases the local crew would wait for the road crew arrival to commence unloading the trucks and setting up the show. Absent on site instruction, guidance and management relating to the process whereby these trucks are unpacked and the production assembled it is logical to wait, regardless of the stakes involved. To do otherwise would take tremendous willingness, experience, patience and determination on the part of an unfamiliar crew to attempt the effort.
Once clear of Canada Customs and Immigration we arrived to discover John Gallagher, David Martin and the men and women of IATSE Local 63 incredulously engaged in the process and to the extraordinary degree attributing their professionalism not only had carefully unpacked the trucks, but, were able to ascertain key elements of the production set up and accomplished a highly significant amount of the setting up process.
As a result of their actions cancelling the opening night performance due to lack of sufficient time was avoided and the remaining process was achieved in three hours instead of our standard 5-6 hours; frankly averting a major disaster.
I have witnessed and experienced first hand numerous local crews in action and I say to you this is one fantastic organization of highly skilled, professional men and women who know their craft and when the show was in difficulty did not hesitate to come to our rescue. They should to be recognized and appreciated for their contribution. We had a show that night due to them. You must be proud of these exceptional ambassadors.
I look forward to working together again in the future.
Thank you,
Ray Chandler
Company Manager-Jesus Christ Superstar National Tour

The Dropkick Murphys
This is the statement that Dropkick Murphys read at their concert at the MTS centre (provided by IATSE Local 63):
IATSE Local 63 is the union representing stagehands, sound and lighting technicians and others who have worked the vast majority of events in Winnipeg since 1899, including everything at the old Winnipeg Arena for 50 years. Despite Negotiating for months before the opening of the MTS Centre, at the last minute True North informed IATSE of its plans to contract out the stage crew work to Nasco, a non-unioized temp firm from BC. This also includes the services of off-duty Winnipeg Firemen who are simply earning extra cash while our members have lost income and are struggling to feed there families. Currently the IATSE is locked out unable to provide even its own regular clients the ability to work in this great facility.
From Ken Casey (DKM)
Hey John, it was good to meet you yesterday. Thanks again for
the shirts. Based on how angry the venue people were
by my comments, must have struck a nerve but more importantly
the crowd seemed very fired up about it and very supportive
of you guys. Good luck to you all we’ll be thinking
of ya!
The Champion Act “Dropkick Murphys" rolled through town September 25th and found us picketing outside the MTS Centre. What did they do? They did what they always do, they supported us. This band is truly a class act. After hearing our side they showed solidarity by wearing our IA t-shirts and telling the audience all about True North – Nasco and what happened to the IA.
Please check these
guys out and buy their CDs.
We owe ‘em one.
